| | Evan Guerrero, St. Margaret’s Class of 2006, was named one of the captains of the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team on November 9. The Lehigh Web site article quotes head coach Kevin Cassesse as saying, “So far this fall, I have been pleased with the overall leadership of this team. I believe there are several members of the senior, junior and sophomore classes that are more than capable of being team captains, and the player voting reflected that. In the end, I am proud to announce four outstanding young men as team captains in the 2009-10 campaign.”
Guerrero was one of those four captains. The Lehigh Web site reports, “Guerrero, a defenseman, started all 15 games as a junior, recording two goals and one assist. He earned a spot on the All-Patriot League Teams after leading the team in caused turnovers with 39 and finishing second in ground balls with 42. As a sophomore, Guerrero started all 15 games and scooped up 20 groundballs. His rookie season, Guerrero appeared in eight games while starting two and he scooped up five ground balls.”

He won his third tournament of the year as he was the medalist at the Kingsmen Invitational with a five-over 321. Junior captain and midfielder Kendra Davidson ’06 of Division III Emerson College was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the second time this season. During the week, Davidson scored four goals including a successful penalty kick, and she is the Lions scoring leader with 10 goals and 7 assists. Kendra was also a Tartan captain and an Academic All-American while at St. Margaret’s
Junior Nicole Sady-Kennedy ’06, a team captain and an All-American and Academic All-American at St. Margaret’s, had assists in the past two victories for Division III Claremont McKenna College including the game-winning assist in sudden-death overtime for the Athenas as they defeated St. Olaf’s College.
Red-shirt freshman midfielder Lauren Johnson ’06 of the Division II Urban Knights of the Academy of Arts in San Francisco notched her first game-winning assist of the year in a 1-0 defeat of Grand Canyon University. Lauren was a 1st Team All-CIF performer for St. Margaret’s.
Courtney Kent ’07 and the Division 1 Georgetown University women's soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak on Tuesday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over St. John's. In the final regular-season home game for the Hoyas, Courtney headed home the game-winner in the 63rd minute off a throw-in for the first goal of her collegiate career. Courtney was a team captain and a 1st Team All-CIF star as a Tartan.
Jessica Zavalza ’08, a team captain and a 1st Team All-CIF athlete at SMES, continues to lead the Division 1 University of Houston Cougar Women’s Soccer team in scoring including two game-winning goals. And, Alex Dreyer ’08 plays for Division 1 Southern Methodist University while Jamie Schiffer ’08, a two-year captain and an All-American and Academic All-American as a Tartan, is a medical red-shirt at Division 1 Boston University. A pair of freshmen earn Conference USA Player of the Week honors for matches through Sept. 7. Houston forward Jessica Zavalza was named the Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals in a 2-0 win over Louisiana-Lafayette to give the Cougars a third-straight victory. UCF keeper Aline Reis collected 15 saves over the weekend, including 10 in a 1-0 shutout of Pacific.

Her goal in the sixth minute was her second game-winner in her last two games. Zavalza now leads the club with three goals and six points just three games into her collegiate career.

Kendra Davidson (Jr., Newport Beach, Calif.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for her play during the week ending September 28. In a week in which the Lions won two conference Games, Davidson scored three goals. She had the game tying and game winning goals in a come from behind 3-1 victory over Johnson & Wales University and scored the game tying goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over Suffolk University. Davidson leads the Lions in both goals (5) and assists (4) in 2008.

| | Former St. Margaret’s All-American swimmer Paul Zaich will compete in USA Swimming’s Olympic Trials this week. Zaich qualified for the trials in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke. The 52 member US Olympic team will be determined by swimmers finishing in the top two spots during this week’s events. Zaich is seated 15th in the 100 breaststroke and 7th in the 200 breaststroke. During his time at SMES, Paul set 7 school records, was a 3 time NISCA All-American, and named to the All Orange County team in 2005. The Olympic Trials will run from June 30th –July 5th. The Bruin men's track and field team picked up a foursome of All-American honorees on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, IA as Greg Garza, Henry Hagenbuch, Boldizsar Kocsor and Johnny Quinn highlighted the Bruin men.
In the pole vault, none of the competitors had a particularly strong competition as swirling winds wreaked havoc on all of the vaulters. Freshman Johnny Quinn was able to pick up the first All-American honor of his career as he tied for eighth with a mark of 16-8.75. Junior Dustin DeLeo placed 13th with an equal clearance of 16-8.75.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. And sure, boredom played a part in that.
The waves at Salt Creek Beach were too tame to pique much interest; nothing else did, either. So rather than sit idle on this sunny summer afternoon, Johnny Quinn set out to pole vault in the front yard of his Dana Point home ... not just pole vault, but clear 121/2 feet.
Now, that might be a pedestrian height for a collegiate pole vaulter when graced with proper facilities such a cushy pit in which to land. But perhaps it is not when the run-up is set between parked cars and rose bushes rather than an all-weather, synthetic surface.
Quinn wasn't certain. But he knew that he was going to give it a shot anyway.
"That's the kind of stuff that we do when there's nothing to do," he said.
So Quinn pulled the plug off the end of the fiberglass pole, hoping it would dig in and stick in the grass. He tied together a couple of old surfboard leashes to use as a crossbar.
He was going to pull the mattress off his bed to use as a landing pit, but his mom quashed that idea. Instead, he pulled two cushions off the sofa and placed them strategically on the ground.
Quinn had a buddy there with a video camera to tape it.
A lean backward, then seven, eight strides and up and over the makeshift crossbar he went. He landed on his feet — barefoot, of course — went into a roll and came to a stop a foot or two from a car parked in a driveway.
"It probably wasn't the best idea in retrospect, but it was a lot of fun," he said.
That sort of entertainment is not at all anomalous in the UCLA Bruins' close-knit pole vault program and is an appropriate introduction to a growing powerhouse spiced with personalities from Orange County.
It is a group that surfs together, skateboards, snowboards — and thinks nothing of catapulting two stories at the end of a fiberglass pole while enduring injuries, embracing the danger involved and recognizing it might not be a sport for everyone.
"I've always liked adventure. … I don't know why anyone thought it would be a great idea for a sport, but it's really fun," said Tori Pena, an Edison High graduate.
"We're the kids jumping off roofs and jumping off apartment buildings into pools, that kind of thing," said Dustin Deleo, from Los Alamitos.
Of the 16 pole vaulters in the UCLA program (eight men and eight women), seven are from Orange County high schools.
"It's the power of the Orange," Anthony Curran, the Bruins' pole vault coach, said jokingly.
Junior Bobby Talley, who won the Pac-10 outdoor championships with a jump of 17-1, went to Dana Hills. Redshirt freshman Greg Woepse, third at the conference championship meet at 17-1, went to Mater Dei. Senior Megan Jamerson, who has cleared 1331/2 and is tied for eighth on the UCLA career top 10, went to Santa Margarita. Elizabeth Woepse, who struggled through hamstring injuries in her senior season, also went to Mater Dei.
Deleo, Quinn and Pena qualified for the NCAA championships, which begin today at Des Moines, Iowa, along with Tori Anthony and Katy Viuf. With five athletes advancing, UCLA has more pole vaulters at the national championship meet that any other program.
All five could score, most prominently Deleo, who in April cleared 18-1, the second-best mark in the nation this year and fifth best in UCLA history.
The possibility of an injury is a constant in the sport. Deleo fractured three bones in his hand when a pole snapped on him during a vault, Quinn was forced to sit out for 14 weeks because of a fractured vertebrae, Viuf was in the emergency room earlier this season after what she coolly referred to as a crash. But with all risks come rewards."There's always that fear factor. That's what makes these kids great, when you can block that out and go," Curran said. "Sailing over the bar, there's no feeling like it."

Fava honored as Rookie of the Year as Roger Williams University holds annual Athletics Banquet.
BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University held its annual Athletic Awards Banquet in the Campus Recreation Center Fieldhouse Monday evening. Highlighting the evening were the six major awards handed out including RWU Male and Female Rookies of the Year. Freshman men’s basketball point guard Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) received Male Rookie of the Year honors after leading the men’s basketball team (17-11 on the season) in minutes played (30.9 mpg) and assists (87). Fava finished the season ranked 8th nationally in NCAA Div. III Men’s Basketball for Assist to Turnover Ratio.

Annie Wilson ripped a bases clearing triple in the second inning to give the Colby College softball team a 6-2 victory over Bowdoin College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Thursday at Crafts Field. The Mules moved to 9-12 overall and 3-7 in the conference, while Bowdoin falls to 22-10 and 4-6 in league play.
Colby pitcher Alyssa Crowell pitched a three-hit complete game, struck out two, and walked one in moving to 4-2 on the season. Julia Jacobs (10-6) took the loss in the circle for Bowdoin.
Alison Coleman and Clare Ronan scored Bowdoin's runs in the top of the second inning for a 2-0 lead. After Coleman struck out but got on by a passed ball, Ronan put runners at second and third with a triple. Courtney LaPierre had an RBI groundout and Ronan later scored on an error.
Christine Gillespie had an RBI single to drive in Tory Starr to cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Wilson, who had two of Colby's six hits, then had her big hit to drive in Mollie Puskar, Lizzi Fort and Gillespie.
The Mules loaded the bases in the fourth inning and got one run from Fort after Carlie Minichino was hit by a pitch. Colby closed out the scoring in the sixth when Allyson Cheever walked and scored on Minichino's double.
The Mules and Bowdoin will play a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. in Brunswick.

Four Alaska Anchorage players were among the 52 student-athletes named Wednesday to the 2007-08 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Basketball All-Academic Teams.
On the men’s side, senior Jared Kettler, of Dana Point, Calif., tied for the second-best GPA among the 18 men’s honorees. A double-major in aviation technology and management, Kettler carries an overall 3.74 GPA. Kettler also earned GNAC academic honors as a sophomore in 2005-06.
To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.

Hutch Parker, as a member of the University of San Diego Toreros, was named to 2007 The Sports Network Mid Major and Independent All American Squad as the Kicker for the Second Team. During Hutch’s tenure at the University of San Diego, the team amassed an overall record of 38-8, a .820% winning percentage, while winning Two Mid America National Championships and three Pioneer Football League Titles. Sara Kettler helped lead the Pioneer volleyball team to their first macth victory away from Pamplin Sports Center in 40 tries. Kettler led the Pioneers with 15 kills, hitting an impressive .481 in the game. She also had an ace and two solo blocks, accounting for 18 points in the three-game match. Ketter ended the week hitting .444 in the Pioneers two matches (six games).

In addition to her captaincy, Alumni SuzieTrimble was honored with the Unsung Hero award. She made the all-tournament team to lead Harvard to the New England Challenge championship. Trimble led the Crimson with a .231 hitting percentage and 1.04 blocks per game and ranked second with 2.67 kills per game.

Parker made field goals of 36 and 34 yards and was a perfect 5-of-5 on PATs in San Diego’s victory against Dixie State. He also had eight kickoffs totaling 473 yards (59.1 ypko). His 11 points were fourth most by a kicker in Week 2.
This is the fourth time Hutch has earned player of the week honors for the Pioneer Football League.

2005 alumnus and 2008 Olympic Trials Qualifier, Paul Zaich swam for Stanford University's 26th straight Pac-10 Championship team this past weekend in Washington. Paul finaled (top-8) in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes and in the 200 Individual Medley. All three swims were lifetime bests and each were faster than the NCAA Division I qualifying standards. The #2 nationally ranked Cardinal will try to win its ninth national team championship in three weeks when they travel to Minneapolis, MN for the NCAA Division I Finals.

Parker, USD's senior place kicker, earned his 5th career PFL special teams player of the week honor, and his first this year. He was responsible for 11 points in San Diego's victory against Drake. He was a perfect 8-of-8 on PATs - improving to 37-of-37 this season, and added a 39-yard field goal. Parker also handled the Toreros kickoff duties, kicking off nine times for 511 yards (56.8 ypk).
Senior kicker Hutch Parker (Dana Point, CA), who is a perfect 37-for-37 in PAT kicks this season, has 43 points [career total of 251] this season... With his 2nd PAT kick against Valparaiso he became the University of San Diego’s all-time leading scorer... He passed by RB Evan Harney's mark of 236 (2003-2004)... Parker is also the program's career leader in PAT kicks with 173.

Hutch proved to be the difference maker in San Diego’s 52-49 PFL victory against Davidson, Saturday. He made all seven of his PATs – he has not missed a PAT in 53 tries this season – and kicked a 29-yard field goal with 4:21 remaining in the fourth quarter that proved to be the game winner. Parker also handled the kickoff duties for the Toreros, booting nine kickoff for 457 yards (50.8 ypk).

Women’s volleyball senior Suzie Trimble (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) is the Harvard COOP student-athlete of the week for November 12. Trimble ended her volleyball career on a high note. She had 32 kills, hit .500 and posted four blocks in a win over Columbia, 3-0, and a 3-2 loss to Cornell. Trimble had eight kills and two blocks against the Lions, while hitting. 353. Against the Big Red, Trimble registered a team-high 24 kills and hit .488. She collected 10 kills on 10 attempts to lead the Crimson to a 30-28 win in game two. She also earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors for her efforts.

The UCLA men's track and field program took down the USC Trojans 89-74 on Saturday.
The biggest highlights of the day came from Kevin Craddock and Johnny Quinn as both posted lifetime-best marks to win their respective events.
Craddock, who had only run in one high hurdles race this season, blazed past the competition to win in a wind-legal lifetime-best of 13.46.
Quinn had a huge day in the pole vault, winning the event with a new best mark of 17 feet - 5 inches. That mark ranks fifth in the NCAA this season and is especially notable considering Quinn has only recently returned to competition, after recovering from a broken back suffered in practice earlier this year.
Junior Dustin DeLeo finished second to Quinn in the vault with an identical mark of 17-5. Junior Bobby Talley was third with a mark of 16-7.25 along with Senior Zack Miller and Freshman Greg Woepse. All five vaulters posted NCAA regional qualifying marks.

Hutch Parker was named Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week for his part in the Toreros 37-31 win over Holy Cross.
Parker got USD on the board with a 32-yard FG with 1:53 remaining in the first quarter, tying the game at 3-3 ... he also was a perfect 4-for-4 in PAT kicks for a total of 7 points.
